What is Wayfarers State Park?
Wayfarers is a Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks state park near Bigfork on the northeast shore of Flathead Lake. It has a boat launch, a picnic shelter, swimming, and a rocky shoreline and cliffs popular with hikers and photographers. Day use is open year-round, and the campground is open April through October. Montana residents who pay the state parks registration fee don't pay a daily entrance fee; nonresidents pay a day-use fee (Montana FWP). The Evergreen has no private or deeded lake access, so public parks like Wayfarers are how our guests swim, paddle or picnic on the lake.
How do you hike the Jewel Basin?
The Jewel Basin Hiking Area in the Flathead National Forest is "maintained exclusively for hiking and camping." It has more than 20 lakes. The main trailhead is the Camp Misery parking lot, which "can be very crowded on blue bird days." Dogs must be on a leash. The Forest Service asks visitors to read the area regulations first and to call the Hungry Horse-Glacier View Ranger District for current snow and trail conditions (USFS). Go early on summer weekends and carry bear spray.
When is the best time to visit Bigfork?
Summer is peak season: lake days and the playhouse season. Late spring and early fall are quieter. In winter, the valley becomes a base for skiing at Whitefish Mountain Resort (see our Whitefish Mountain Resort ski trip guide) and the holiday events in the Flathead winter holidays guide.
Can we bring a boat to Flathead Lake?
Yes, through public ramps. The Evergreen's driveway fits three vehicles plus a trailer, so you can tow a boat and launch at a public ramp or marina. No boat, dock or slip is included with the stay (The Evergreen). Montana has strict aquatic invasive species rules. All watercraft entering Montana must be inspected before launching. Watercraft used outside the Flathead Basin must be inspected before launching in the basin. You must stop at every open inspection station you pass while hauling a boat. Nonresident watercraft, including non-motorized craft like paddleboards, need an AIS Prevention Pass (Montana FWP).
