Somers & the Flathead Valley: a town-by-town guide.

The Evergreen sits in Somers, Montana, at the north end of Flathead Lake in Flathead County. Guests ask us the same question before every trip: which towns should we plan around? This is our honest answer — the six places that shape a stay here, what each one is actually for, and the official links to check before you go.

Somers — home base

Somers is a small, quiet town at the north end of Flathead Lake, and it is where the house is. The public access point guests use most is Somers Beach State Park, a Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks site on the lake. Somers is not a nightlife town — it is the place you come back to. That is exactly why the hot tub, barrel sauna, fire pit and speakeasy matter here: the evening happens at the house.

The Evergreen has no private, deeded, direct or property-specific lake access. Flathead Lake is reached the same way everyone else does — nearby public beaches, public boat ramps, marinas and parks. No boat, dock or slip is included with the stay.

Lakeside — the west shore

Lakeside sits on the west shore of Flathead Lake and is the gateway to Blacktail Mountain Ski Area, which looks down over the lake. In summer the west-shore state parks are the draw; in winter, Blacktail is the local ski hill. Check each official site for seasons and hours before you plan the day.

Kalispell — the practical stop

Kalispell is the Flathead County seat and the valley's main shopping town. This is where groups do the big grocery run, pick up gear and handle errands. Glacier Park International Airport serves the valley, so Kalispell is also most guests' first or last stop of the trip.

Whitefish — the evening out

Whitefish is the valley's resort town: a walkable downtown of restaurants and shops, and Whitefish Mountain Resort above it. In winter it is the big-mountain ski day; in summer it is the dinner-and-a-stroll plan. Our Whitefish ski trip guide covers the winter version in detail.

Columbia Falls — toward Glacier

Columbia Falls sits between the lake and the park, and it is the town most guests pass through on a Glacier day. It has its own small downtown worth a stop, and it is the practical fuel-and-supplies point before a full day in the mountains.

Glacier National Park — the big day

Glacier is the reason many groups book this trip at all. Plan it as a full day, and plan it from the official source: the National Park Service Glacier site publishes entry reservations, road openings and shuttle details, and the current conditions page is the one to check the morning you go. Going-to-the-Sun Road opening dates change every year with the snow, so never plan around last year's calendar.

How groups usually split the week

The pattern we see most: a lake day from a public access point, a Glacier day, a Whitefish evening, a Kalispell supply run folded into one of those, and at least one full day at the house — game room, speakeasy, hot tub, fire pit — because that is why everyone booked a home instead of hotel rooms. Browse more ideas on things to do around Flathead Lake, build the days on plan it, and see the valley on the local guide. For park details beyond this guide, the Montana state parks and NPS pages are the authoritative sources.
